If your little one is a stylist in training or just wants to learn how to braid hair, she’ll love a big Candylocks doll. These cuties are specifically made for styling play–the more creative the better. Here’s our parents’ guide to these affordable hair-driven dolls. But first…check the price on Amazon because one version is on sale for a really great price.
1. What are big Candylocks dolls?
Big Candylocks dolls are bigger versions of the popular small Candylocks dolls. They are also called Sugar Style Deluxe dolls. Candylocks dolls are based on cotton candy (and smell like it too). They have super long wool-like hair perfect for styling.
2. A big Candylocks doll is 7 inches tall.
These cuties are more than twice the size of regular Candylocks dolls and LOL tot dolls. They aren’t as tall as Barbies or OMG dolls. We definitely prefer this height of doll because it makes the doll easier to hold while styling her hair. Hairstyles can also be more dramatic because the doll is taller and bigger than a normal Candylocks doll.
The only downside is that there are currently only 2 options (more on this later). Hopefully, more versions will be released in the future.
3. There’s 1 foot of cotton candy hair.
The doll is only 7 inches tall but, boy, does have super long hair. Your little one will have 12 whole inches of wool hair to braid, bun, stack, and pile as much as she wants.
An IMPORTANT note on the doll’s head:
This doll only has half a head. She’s basically missing the back of her head because that is where the hair is attached. Although we wish it would have been possible to make a doll with a whole head and just attached the hair, apparently it wasn’t. A big Candylocks doll’s hair is not rooted in clumps of hair like you see in dolls with other types of hair. We guess the big wool pieces could not be attached that way.
Hopefully, your little one won’t care.
4. Do NOT use a brush or comb on this doll!
You absolutely, positively can NOT use typical styling tools are products on this doll. The hair is like wool or big pieces of yarn. If she tries to comb it, the hair will come out, mess up the comb, and probably destroy the doll.
So how does she style the hair?
With her hands! This doll is made so that the big “dreads” pull apart and stick together with very little effort. She can do just about any style she likes just using her hands.
Your little one may not be able to use a comb or brush on Candylocks dolls, but she can still use hair clips and ponytail holders.
5. The doll on the box is the doll inside.

6. There are only 2 big Candylocks dolls.
Although Candylocks dolls have been around, the larger 7-inch version (this version) is new so there are only two available. We’ve provided them below in detail so you can see everything on the dolls.
The dolls are the same size. Their clothes and shoes can be removed, so they can switch outfits. Unfortunately, they are both wearing dresses so your little one would just be switching the one piece (there are no outfits to style).

7. Candylocks dolls smell like their flavors.
Well, for the most part. Any doll you order is going to have a faint smell but it will be depend on:
- where the doll was stored (it may smell like surrounding flavors)
- what was next to the doll when it was stored (some objects can absorb the small)
- when your doll was produced (the smell faded over time)
8. A big Candylocks doll comes with 3 or 4 accessories.

- A purse
- Sunglasses
- Clippable hair extension
- Hair chalk
Your little one can use the hair extension and hair chalk on her own hair, too!

9. Your little one can wash the hair!
Image: AmazonIf this hair chalk wasn’t washable, the doll would be ruined immediately. Fortunately, the hair is washable!
While many popular dolls with hair don’t recommend getting the hair wet, Candylocks dolls love it.
Just be sure to thoroughly dry the hair before more play. We recommend letting it air dry or line dry for one day after it gets wet.
And yes…the chalk will rinse out of your little one’s hair as well.
10. Says ages 5+, but we think 6-10 only.
If you have a 5-year old that likes tasting things or putting yummy smelling things in her mouth, this is not the doll for her…she’ll always be tempted. The series also isn’t great for girls 4 or under because of the small parts (choking hazards) and pointy ends that are perfect for poking eyes.
We think only girls from ages 6 to 10 will be interested in big Candylocks dolls (despite what the pictures on Amazon imply). Girls older than 10 will have moved on to other doll series like OMGs.
